ELTE Botanical Garden (ELTE Füvészkert) is the oldest botanical garden in Hungary. It was founded by Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) in 1771 to study and preserve unique plants. Located in a less famous district VIII, the garden is like a mini forest, where you can observe over 8,000 plant species, from cacti and roses to orchids and water lilies, and different kind of birds, even turtles.
What else can be done here?
In addition to being a recreational spot for visitors, it also provides a venue for education and research. Guided tours are organized for adults and school children, as well as, university students can benefit from this place while writing their dissertations or conducting a research.
Moreover, certain areas of the garden can be rented for different kinds of events. For instance, the upstairs rooms of the building you see in the photo can be rented to host press conferences, exhibitions or receptions.
Sakura Festival in Budapest
Annual Sakura Festival is held in this garden in April. Visitors enjoy Japanese cuisine, exhibition and other various programs. Having a picnic in the lap of nature, while admiring the birds’ chipping and cherry blossoms – isn’t that nice?

How to get there?
You can reach the garden by metro M3 (Klinikák metro station), by bus 9 or by trolleybus 83 (Kálvária tér). Opening hours: every day from 9:00 a.m to 4:00 p.m, from April 1 to October 31.
