Do you have to know Hungarian in Budapest?

The official language of Hungary is #Hungarian.

The most widely used foreign languages in the country are English, German and Russian. The locals speak their native language, with English and other foreign languages being mainly used by younger generation and in the city center.

As a tourist, you don’t need to know Hungarian. Staff at the airport, ticket offices (ticket vending machines have 8 language options, including Russian, English, German and French), hotels/hostels as well as at restaurants, cafes and bars in the downtown speak English. Many times locals have helped me with the translation. ☺️

If you have moved here, knowing Hungarian is not absolutely necessary. I’ve been surviving here for more than a year with knowing just a couple of basic words.🤷🏻 Hungarian is not used in any other states; but learning it is definitely useful for you within the country – especially for finding a job, handling an issue in state agencies, integrating into society and expanding your social circle.
