Which type of public transport ticket should you buy in Budapest?

Most of the main sights in Budapest are easily accessible on foot. It is also easy to get around in the city thanks to an excellent public transportation system. As to the question above, the answer depends on the following factors.

1) If you stay here for a long time and have to use public transport on a daily basis or frequently, you’d better buy a pass:

  • 15-day Budapest-pass // 6300 HUF (app. €18); 2300 HUF (app. €6.5) for students

  • Monthly Budapest-pass // 9500 HUF (app. €27); 3450 HUF (app. €9.7) for students

Both passes are valid of an unlimited number of trips by trams, buses, trolleybuses, metros, trains, national railways and boats (on workdays only).

2) If you come here as a tourist, it depends on how many days you will stay here and how frequently you’ll need to use public transport:

  • 24-hour Budapest-travelcard: 1650 HUF (app. €5)

  • Budapest 24-hour group travelcard (for 1-5 passengers traveling together): 3300 HUF (€9.3)

  • Budapest 72-hour travelcard: 4,150 HUF (app. €12)

  • Budapest 7-day travelcard: 4,950 HUF (app. €14)

If you would like to benefit from other free or discounted services in the city besides a transport pass, you can opt for the following cards:

  • Budapest Card for 24 hours: 6,490 HUF (app. €20);

  • Budapest Card for 48 hours: 9,990 HUF (app. €28);

  • Budapest Card for 72 hours: 12,990 HUF (app. €37);

  • Budapest Card for 96 hours: 15,990 HUF (app. €45);

  • Budapest Card for 120 hours: 18,990 HUF (app. €53)

* For juniors reduced fees apply.

These cards provide you with a number of services:

  • Free services: free public transport; free entrance to 20 museums, the Lukács Bath, various visitor centers; free walking sightseeing tours and a cave tour.

  • Discounted services: 7 thermal baths and pools for 20% discount; 16 cafes for 10-30% discount, and many more discounts from 10 %- 50% to attractions, cultural programs and sights.

I would advise you to review the full list of services, select the ones that you would like to try and then compare whether it makes sense to buy a Budapest card or just a normal travel card and pay for individual services you want to benefit from.

3) You also have an option of buying a block of 10 tickets. The block contains 10 single tickets and you can use each of them for a single uninterrupted trip without transfer by all the transportation means I mentioned above. The price is 3000 HUF (app. €8.5).

4) Single ticket can be used for a single uninterrupted trip by all the transportation means listed above. The price is 300 HUF (app. €0.8).

Note: Validity period for both a block of 10 tickets and a single ticket is 80 minutes after stamping, while it is 120 minutes on night services. During the period of validity, transfers are allowed only between the metro lines (M1, M2, M3 and M4).

In the next post I will write about where you can get these tickets from and how public transport is used in Budapest. Would you like me to take a video about it too?
