When was the last time you picked up fruits or climbed a tree? There are several places in Hungary where you can pick up fresh vegetables and fruits and buy them for a much cheaper price. This is also a good experience to make a short trip to other cities and remember your childhood while climbing the trees.
Yesterday we explored Pomáz, a small and cute town in Hungary, which is just 30 min. away from Budapest by train. There are a lot of orchards with a variety of fruits (apple, strawberry, cherry, peach, apricot, etc.) there and our choice was cherry – but we also picked up sour cherries, green plums and apples for free from the trees on the sidewalks.
What is the concept?
Farmers grow vegetables and fruits in their lands and open them to public use. People pick up the harvest with their own hands and make payment per kg. You can taste the fruits and vegetables on spot for free but it is requested to do so in moderation.
Prices
We picked up 2 kg cherries and paid 1,100 HUF (app. 3 euro), whereas in Spar you can only buy 500 g cherry for this price. Here payments can be made only in cash.
How to find such places?
There is a special website where you can look for such places and see which vegetables and fruits are available in these gardens and orchards: www.gyumolcsvadasz.hu
Producers are listed on the website for free. The goal is to bring producers and buyers together and provide mutual benefits for both sides.
How to get to Pomaz from Budapest?
From Margit híd budai hídfő station take H5 suburban railway train to Pomaz (Szentendre direction). The cost of a one-way ticket (from Budapest to Békásmegyer 300 HUF and from Békásmegyer to Pomaz 250 HUF) is 550 HUF (1.5 euro) and you can get it from the ticket vending machines in the station.
From the station, it takes 30 min. to reach the orchard on foot. You can also take Bolt taxis for 2000 HUF (app. 5.6 euro). If you have a bike, lucky you are!
Are there such initiatives in the city you live in? Would you like to try it?
